The Square Format — A Study in Composition
This gallery features images composed in the 1:1 square format, a perspective that encourages thoughtful balance and simplicity. Each photograph is intentionally framed in the field, allowing the landscape’s structure, light, and natural design to settle within the square frame.
When working in this format, I prefer to compose the scene how I see the subject in the field, rather than relying on cropping later in post-processing. Approaching the landscape this way requires a slower and more deliberate process. Over time, this practice has trained my eye to become more thoughtful and attentive to the natural relationships within the frame.
The square format in landscape photography naturally emphasizes balance and simplicity. Without the directional pull of a wide frame, the viewer’s attention settles more directly on the subject and its surrounding elements. Subtle patterns, tonal transitions, and structural details often become more prominent within this contained perspective.
This collection reflects a more intentional approach to composition, where each photograph is carefully framed in the moment it is discovered. The square frame becomes a quiet structure for observing the landscape—allowing the subject, light, and natural design of the scene to unfold with clarity.
