The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness of New Mexico is one of the most unusual desert landscapes in the American Southwest. Known for its remote badlands, weathered hoodoos, and sculpted rock formations, the terrain feels otherworldly. This body of work focuses on the structure and natural design of the landscape.
At the center of this project, I really wanted to put emphasis on the light in these scenes. It is not the bold, dramatic light often associated with desert photography, but the quiet, understated light that arrives during in the final moments of the day or before the landscape awakens. Under these softer conditions, the landscape begins to slow down visually. Harsh highlights fade, shadows soften, and the subtle contours of the terrain become more pronounced.
During my time visiting various locations in the Bisti Wilderness, I found myself consistently searching for scenes that responded to this particular type of light, especially over the past several years. My vision became much more deliberate. Rather than moving quickly through the landscape, I often waited for the moments when the light would settle into something softer and more subdued. These brief periods of diffused illumination allowed the land to reveal itself differently, where texture, shape, and subtle tonal transitions became the dominant visual elements.
This low, gentle light allows the geological structure of the Bisti badlands to emerge with greater clarity. Soft illumination traces the edges of hoodoos and ridgelines, while deeper shadows settle into the folds and recesses of the earth. The result is a moody, darker, more atmospheric interpretation of the landscape, where form, texture, and tonal depth take precedence.
Rather than relying on spectacle, or loud imagery, these photographs explore the quiet interaction between light and land. The subdued conditions that create a sense of stillness, allowing the natural architecture of the desert to reveal itself gradually.
