The Shape of Time: California's Ancient Redwoods

Since 2015, I have returned to California's ancient redwood forests in search of something that extends beyond the trees themselves. These forests have become a place of solitude, reflection, and connection—a landscape where time reveals itself in towering trunks, weathered bark, and layers of life unfolding beneath an ever-changing canopy. Shrouded in fog, illuminated by fleeting shafts of light, and shaped by centuries of growth and renewal, the redwoods possess a presence that feels both timeless and alive.

What continues to draw me back is not only the scale of these forests, but the atmosphere they create. Wandering alone beneath the canopy, surrounded by silence and filtered light, there is a profound sense of connection between myself and the landscape. The mood is ever-changing; fog drifts between ancient trunks, soft light filters through the forest, and each visit reveals something new within a place that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

While the redwoods themselves stand as enduring monuments to the passage of time, the forest floor tells a different story. Ferns emerge from the shadows, fallen giants slowly return to the earth, and each spring vibrant rhododendrons bring bursts of color to the understory, offering a brief and beautiful contrast to the permanence of the ancient trees above.

Rather than focusing solely on the scale of the redwoods, this collection explores the atmosphere, form, and quiet complexity of the forest. Through moments of drifting fog, soft light, blooming rhododendrons, and intricate natural patterns, these photographs reflect a landscape shaped by both immense age and continual transformation.

The Shape of Time is a study of endurance, renewal, and the enduring beauty of an ancient forest—a place where the passage of centuries can be seen in every trunk, branch, and living thing, and where each visit offers an opportunity to reconnect with both the landscape and oneself.
